NPR informed Audible five motnhs ago that it would be ending its distribution deal at the end of May but the public broadcaster has yet to determine its next step, according to The Mac Observer. Spokeswoman Jennie Lawhorn told TMO that NPR has spoken to a number of companies, including Apple, about “our next move in offering NPR programming in podcast form” but that it is “too early to say when we will make a decision.” She added: “Our radio affiliates are an important part of our existence. We are involving them in this podcast process at every step. We’re trying to find the right formula so we can take advantage of the growing market for podcasting. A year ago, no one even knew what it meant. Now, we have something that is going to be important to our future and we’ve got to figure out how it fits into our overall strategy.”
NPR can’t afford to drain listeners from its member stations. Meanwhile, Audible’s deal with XM will give its subs access to NPR alum and competitor Bob Edwards.
