This might be manna from heaven for Indian telcos who are looking to upgrade their systems for offering 3G services in the near future. London-based Infinite Solutions Ltd (ISL) has launched TATO, a mobile content delivery system that delivers high-quality, multi-media services such as video and live broadcasting to mobile users.
TATO works by streaming compressed data to a mobile device – which is how it is able to deliver 3G services to a 2G device; something that is currently impossible by any other means. In addition, the service is able to benefit from a proprietary technology called WDTS (Wireless Data Transfer Service) which provides a new method for mobile data connectivity.
WDTS effectively utilises the existing voice channel to provide data services so the user does not require GPRS or 3G. Data services, such as e-mail and Internet browsing, for example, could therefore be accessed via an existing voice contract. With WDTS the user is able to access data services at less than a tenth of the cost of GPRS and at significantly faster download speeds.
This will help most of the Indian telcos working on GSM platform who will have to invest heavily on upgrading their equipments. TATO has been developed by Madrid-based MMS, who have appointed ISL to distribute the service in Europe, India, Asia, Australia and New Zealand.
