@ DMS: Keynote: William R. Hearst III, KPCB

William R. Hearst III, a partner at the VC firm Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers is talking about the bridge between Hollywood and Silicon Valley at the Digital Media Summit.

In Silicon Valley, the perception is that prices should always decline, and in Hollywood it is about prices always increase: it is a huge separation between the two. In terms of rights, Valley thinks that the IP ought to be free, but I would take the side of Hollywood that human capital and rights are valuable.

The long tail: I’m still not convinced about it: we will still have the cosmic question: whether we should build a company on scale, or on targeting? These are some of the most interesting issues which businesses have to figure out..

We at KPCB will probably still be looking at scale businesses
