The Economic Times: Qualcomm believes that the Indian market will see faster sales of handsets based on a its new platform that is a rival to Java, now used on many mobiles including that of Reliance Infocomm.
Binary Runtime Environment for Wireless (BREW) is a standard developed by Qualcomm for downloading of applications on mobile phones. Many CDMA-based mobile phones in India now use Java for applications such as downloading of ringtones, news and entertainment clippings and cricket scores.
Qualcomm considers BREW to be more advanced and capable of providing more benefits to the consumers. BREW-based handsets were launched in India some time last year by both Tata Teleservices and Reliance Infocomm. Qualcomm officials estimate that there are about 7,00,000-8,00,000 handsets based on this standard of which about 5,00,000 have been sold by Tata alone. Qualcomm officials expect this number to rise once Reliance starts promoting them aggressively.
