BellSouth To Launch High-Speed Wireless Service Using Intel WiMax

A good week so for Intel and it’s only Tuesday. BellSouth announced today it will launch high-speed residential wireless service with an August trial in Athens, GA., using the early version of Intel’s WiMax. No details yet on price or data speeds. Several Florida cities are next in line. BellSouth, which has been testing various forms of wireless broadband since 2000, will use hardware from Navini Networks. There’s also no standard yet for WiMax, which is being hawked as a way to provide lower-cost ubiquitous service — particularly in areas where providing wired access could be cost prohibitive.Press release.
The deployment of wireless broadband in Athens is about more than wireline costs. The press release mentions “meeting the needs of a diverse and younger population, including college students”; wireless broadband available across the city would give BellSouth an edge over the non-commercial Wireless Athens Group Zone.
