Updated: read below: So much for the hulla-boo about Amazon.com’s entry into audio downloads market: Audible is merrily doing deals and is now tying up with XM. Under the agreement, some of XM’s satellite-radio programming will be made available on audible.com, while a selection of Audible’s content will be available on an XM channel. A new XM radio coming out next year will be capable of receiving XM and storing Audible.com content.
For XM, the partnership means it can collect more revenue, because each time a visitor to audible.com downloads an XM show, XM will get a slice of the fee.
Red Herring: So far, the company has announced the availability of this service only on portable devices…It remains to be seen if Audible content will be available on XM’s car and home devices.
The next step in the satellite radio wars will be to observe Sirius’ next move in the spoken-word content area.
After the news today, Audible’s stock moved up about 15 percent on the market, compared to the big drop it had on Friday when the news of Amazon.com’s entry into audio downloads broke.
