I just had a chance to watch the video stream of Steve Job’s speech to Apple developers yesterday and a couple of details are worth noting. (link via Adam Curry, featured in the presentation; the podcast section lasts about 5 minutes, starting six minutes in.) First, Jobs really didn’t give out a lot of information. Still no answers to what it will take to get into the iTunes podcast directory and whether it will work universally although he did say “you’ll be able to download them for free.”
iTunes is introducing its own podcast to promote New Music Tuesdays, a good idea especially if it actually arrives on Tuesday unlike the newsletter version that hits my inbox on Wednesday.
He closed out the section with this: “It’s very, very simple and we think it’s basically going to take podcasting mainstream to where anyone can do it and really easy to find these podcasts, really easy to listen to. (It’s) going to be one more way where iPod and the iTunes digital community are really at the forefront of this stuff, bringing the innovation into the marketplace.”
Only problem is Apple is actually behind this particular curve. Sure, the company will play a leading role by dint of its mp3/software market share but the innovation is already in the marketplace and Apple will be joining a lot of other people and companies at the forefront.
