3G Services On 2G Handsets?

UK-based Infinite Solutions has announced the launch of TATO which it claims can deliver “high-quality, multi-media services such as video and live broadcasting to mobile users” even if they only have 2G handsets. Considering the streaming video of most 3G networks is barely acceptable I find it difficult to believe an adequate service can be supplied with less bandwidth — although I haven’t seen a demonstration so it may be possible…it would certainly open up the mobile content market to a far greater audience, which could only be a benefit.
The system uses WDTS (Wireless Data Transfer Service) which uses the voice channel to transfer data…”TATO has been developed by Madrid-based MMS, who have appointed ISL to distribute the service in Europe, India, Asia, Australia and New Zealand.”
