Analysys has published a report called “The Future of MVNOs in the 3G Era” which predicts that 3G operators will compete for the most successful MVNOs: “mobile operators may find themselves battling not just for the loyalty of their own customers, but for MVNOs that have millions of customers“. It makes sense — so far MVNOs (companies which offer a mobile service by renting spectrum and infrastructure from an operator) have had to compete on price, but 3G technology opens up the opportunity to compete on content. “A new wave of MVNOs are already leading the way”, says Alastair Brydon, report co-author, “Universal Music, TV channel M6 and radio station NRJ all plan to set up MVNOs in France. Sports content provider ESPN, owned by Disney, plans an MVNO in the USA while a number of data-only MVNOs have emerged with services for mobile devices.”
The incipient MVNO getting the most press at the moment is Amp’d, which is targeting the 18-35 year-old market with emphasis on extreme sports and other content likely to appeal to them. Amp’d is different from the companies listed above in that it is a completely new brand rather than an existing content company planning to leverage its brand for an MVNO.
Amp’d has announced it will have a special section in its portal which will allow customers to play games for prizes. The section will offer InfoSpace’s “For Prizes Network” of popular tournament mobile games, including Hold’em Poker+ for Prizes, Solitaire for Prizes and Prize-21 for Prizes. The section will include games from Infospace’s partner publishers, including Superscape’s AMF Xtreme Bowling for Prizes and First Star Software’s Boulder Dash Tournaments for Prizes.
