According to a report from Telephia, which measures monthly mobile content purchase activity from the phone bills of 30,000 US panelists, “during the three months of February through April 2005, women bought 60% of mobile games”. The most popular games (JAMDAT’s poker game Downtown Texas Hold’em and Tetris — six of the top ten games were by JAMDAT) were bought in equal numbers by both genders, but others revealed fairly predictable differences. “Bejeweled, a popular internet puzzle game, was purchased by almost three times as many women as men. Buzztime, a trivia game made famous in sports bars, is purchased by almost twice as many men as women.”
This contrasts with a recent report by M:Metrics which said that men were twice as likely to download mobile games as women. The two research companies collect data in different ways and its difficult to say which is best or what the differences are — I think a statistician is needed for that. Anyway, I think both sets of research show that women are just as likely to play (and download) mobile games as men as long as there are games available that they are interested in.
