The Japanese Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC) has announced new spectrum plans that will allow three new companies to launch mobile services in the nation (although many reports indicated only two new companies will be offered licenses). Considering the significance of the Japanese mobile content market any shakeup is bound to have consequences (especially for Vodafone, which is having a lot of trouble in that market) so expect to see some manoeuvring by the current players, much of which will revolve around content.
Two Japanese companies expected to get the nod are Softbank, broadcasts interactive broadband content, and eAccess, a broadband ISP. eAccess welcomed the announcment by MIC, and has indicated a plan to work with Tokai Corporation and Tokai Broadband Communications “in the mobile broadband business based on the W-CDMA and HSDPA mobile broadband network which eAccess is currently testing…T-Com, eAccess’ business partner in wholesale ADSL services, and Internet service providers of TOKAI, the parent company of T-Com, have reached an agreement to assess the possibility of working jointly on the commercialization of MVNO (Mobile Virtual Network Operator) mobile broadband business”.
