Updated:Lost in the shuffle (no pun intended) of the fuss over Intel, duriong his keynote to developers today, Steve Jobs also showed off the new podcast capabilities coming for the next version of iTunes.
MacObserver.com: Jobs said iTMS market share was up to 82 percent in May with a 76-percent market share for iPods. iTMS has passed 430 million downloads. Jobs called podcasting the “hottest thing going on in radio.” He demonstrated the new features for iTunes.
Engadget: Jobs: “The pros have realized this is huge.” He showed album art synchronized to the podcast music and played up the potential quality of sound. He also called podcasting “Tivo for radio” and “Wayne’s World for radio.”
Jobs also says the Apple stores are getting 1 million visitors a week.
ipodlounge: Merrill Lynch analyst Steven Milunovich said Apple execs he met with are downplaying video support for the iPod. “Movies take too long to download for now, are not watched over and over, and that unlike music there are many ways to acquire movies. … Still, we think video capability (especially for music videos) could be added to the iPod.” As for subscription music, Milunovich sees Apple introducing a subscription version of iTunes that could be less profitable, at least in the short term, than selling songs. Then again, unlike Napster, Rhapsody and possibly Yahoo, Apple doesn’t see the music itself as a major profit center. Milunovich said that Apple doesn’t expect iTunes to make much money. “The company doesn’t seem optimistic that songs will be a major profit contributor.”
