The German book trade association is organizing its own digital indexing project, Volltextsuche Online, in response to the Google book digitizing project called Google Print. The German project includes some publishing industry heavyweights like Verlagsgruppe Georg von Holtzbrinck, a media group based in Stuttgart.
Google’s ambitious undertaking has created unease in France and has led to a European effort to organize an alternative library scanning initiative. The Association of American University Presses here has also raised fears that the Google project could lead to massive copyright infringement.
