Real Claws Its Way Back Into Black

Between music, games and its streaming media software, Real pushed its way back into profit for the 1st quarter. The company is looking for more deals that leverage the widespread use of its free media player. Google and The Weather Channel each pay the company when a user downloading the media software also agrees to install their applications (the Google Toolbar, TWC’s weather notifier). On the music front, Real introduced three new variations of its Rhapsody only to be upstaged and financially slammed when Yahoo Music Unlimited debuted at less than half the price. Wall Street “totally overreacted” to the Yahoo news, as Delafield Hambrecht analyst Peter Spear told the Puget Sound Business Journal, but knowing that doesn’t help Real as it continues to push for profit — and respect.
