SmartVideo, which seems to continually announce new additions to its mobile video channel, has come out with something new. It’s partnered with Pixiem to release five games aimed at smartphone devices. “The 50 million smartphone users and millions more PDA owners around the world now have access to mobile games including Smart Golf Plus, Metalion, Fun2Link, Bubble Mania and Crash Bomb.” There’s a lot in the press release about how good SmartVideo’s mobile video service is and how good they are at marketing and so on, and that could well be true — but a move into games is a little odd. I think it’s the first non-video content they’ve offered, and it seems to be under a different business model…the games are purchased rather than subscribed to. “These games are available for download and play at both http://www.smartvideo.com and http://www.Handango.com, for $5 per game or all five for $19.99.”
I’m all for diversification of income, but I’m not sure this is the best move for SmartVideo unless they plan to launch a “SmartGame” portal…
