Charge vs. No Charge Debate Continues

The theme of Leslie Walker’s piece from D: seems to be newspapers are still cleaning up the mess they made when they put content on the web for free in the 90s. Lost in the shuffle: the amount of online subscription experiments and start-ups many newspapers took part in dating back at least two decades. News organizations (newspapers do not equal news industry, as is suggested here)were grappling with ways to distribute content in digital format long before the web. Given that no one’s yet come up with a magic bullet that works for every news site with a print counterpart, the real search now is for the right mix that makes the most sense for each outlet.
