An interesting note from Standard & Poor’s Equity Research, which reiterated a “sell” rating on downloadable audio company Audible, noting that “podcasting constitutes a growing threat” to the company, “particularly its Periodicals and Radio and TV categories.”
The research note said that a number of media outlets have recently announced new and free podcasting offerings, “which we think will detract from interest in similar content from Audible that generally costs $6.95 to $12.95 a month per download.”
It remains to be seen how Audible responds to the changes in the market…it has publicly said it is working on podcasting software, and it will go live in Q3. Conceptually, it is a huge opportunity for the company, but then, as with a lot of things these days, a potential threat too…
