The phenomenon of hyperventilating over porn on mobiles is certainly not restricted to the Korean press, but they do seem to draw a lot of flimsy conclusions from shaky data. This article has some figures of how much each operator earned from adult content, although the source of the figures is not revealed. What’s interesting is the claim that people accessing content pay a lot more in bandwidth fees than for the actual content…”For example, if one views 30 pictures of adult content with 20kB, one has to pay just 1,000 to 2,000 won in information usage fee, but one has to pay 7,500 won in calling charges. Though the information usage fee of a motion picture that is shown for three minutes (3,000kB) is mere a 400 to 600 won, its calling charges amount to 7,800 won.”
This should be looked at considering how successful mobile content is in Korea.
The article goes on to quote a statement by a politician as fact despite it being the dodgiest piece of inferred statistics I’ve ever come across, including some music industry claims about piracy.
