Perhaps the most enjoyable session today at the SIIA Content Forum was the lunch-interview with Bob Merry, the president, CEO and publisher of the Congressional Quarterly, one of the oldline publications which has made a good transition online with CQ.com and its various databases. He was very frank and forthright about the vulnerabilities his company faces in the online information world, and how the company has been responding to it…it was refreshing to see someone like him go beyond the coached-to-death-talking-points which most media company CEOs do these days.
He talked about the bloggers today and how they hark back to the old days of when the opinion-based newspapers started in the 19th century; he also talked about trying to expand his readership beyond the Beltway crowd; and also about how his company and other media companies need to think about using search more effectively, with the idea to leverage a mix of open and premium content.
