Soccer and Lacrosse and Horse Racing…Oh My…

Sports has always promised to be big on mobile phones, if only because it tends to be big everywhere. We have a few new games this week, and like all sports games they come branded with a famous sportsman…or at least famous in that particular game. I suppose it’s a good way for the sports heroes to get some extra cash…
A Pele-branded soccer game: “Soccer legend Edson Arantes do Nascimento, known internationally as Pele, has signed an exclusive agreement with Global Wireless Entertainment (GWE) to usher the superstar into mobile communications marketing. GWE plans to develop, distribute and market a series of 2D and 3D wireless games and information applications bearing the name, likeness and image of Pele.” GWE doesn’t plan to stop there but is working on deals with other “sports legends and global brands” including Muhammad Ali, Wayne Gretsky, Evel Knievel (Woo-Hoo! This’ll be cool), Mario Andretti, Ivan “Ironman” Stewart, John Elway, the Harlem Globetrotters, Callaway Golf, Reef and Fox Racing.
Mikey PowellBrine Announces Lacrosse Game: Soccer and lacrosse equipment vendor Brine has tappedd Skyzone to develope and publish “Brine Lacrosse”, the first interactive game to feature lacrosse and Brine’s own Mikey Powell on mobile phones. I first came across lacrosse as a game played in girls boarding schools in the Enid Blyton books I read as a child — I was therefore startled to learn the game was quite violent, for example allowing you to “take out” an opponent by hitting them with your stick. The game is due out this summer…
Frankie Dettori’s Horse Racing: This game “allows players to train and compete in the art of flat racing under Frankie’s watchful eye. With in-game commentary and advice from Frankie, players can choose their horse strategically, taking into consideration key abilities such as speed, stamina, breaking, response and course preference before leading their horse to the track”.
