While other newspapers start a blog or two of their own or start covering blogs, the News & Record in Greensboro, NC is working on a town square that blurs the lines between the paper and its community. The hyperbole may be a little thick in this LA Times report: “Many believe that the state’s third-largest city is once again ground for a revolution, albeit bloodless and virtually invisible, but still one of national consequence.” Still, it certainly is one of the most interesting experiments being undertaken by a traditional news outlet.
The paper is still three-six months away from incorporating grassroots correspondents into the news site. Editor John Robinson said the website was in the black in 2004 but can’t predict the impact yet or the future business model; “We’ll figure out a way to make money.”
