The Economic Times:
Thanks to the digital technology, bollywood has always tried to bridge the divide between India and Pakistan. Now it’s going to a different level.
On May 29, Nazar, a Mahesh Bhatt movie, will become the first Indian film to be premiered on Pakistan Television. “And no, this is not a television channel from Dubai. It is a purely Pakistani channel that operates from within Pakistan itself,” says an ecstatic Mahesh Bhatt, an hour after he had inked the deal with the private channel. “This is the first brick that we have laid in the long path of Indo-Pak exchange…Having used cricket, it is high time we begin to use cinema as one of the tools of confidence building. Because nothing binds people more than shared entertainment,” says Bhatt.
He has also struck a deal for five other of his films – after Nazar , the television channel Aaj TV will telecast Murder, Sir, Tamanna, Ghulam and Najayaz.
Says Bhatt, “Digital technology has already made it possible for Indian software to permeate every home in Pakistan. The government will have to realise it can’t keep its theatres closed to Indian cinema any longer. Not in a globalised age when you have to be sensitive to your neighbour.”
