This article — based on Impaq Group’s “Mobile Life 1″ report into Mobility and Customer Loyalty — lists the top ten functions mobiles are used for today and the top ten (new) things people want to use mobile for in the future. Music? Videos? Massively Multiplayer Mobile Games? Pornography? No…none of those things are on either list. The first list is unsurprising with voice and SMS topping the list — but I’m not sure “switching to silent mode”, which is number three, should really be considered as a function that people use since its primary purpose is to turn off the function of call and message alerts.
The future wish list demonstrates the lack of imagination that most people have when thinking of new technology — it’s primarily about paying for things with your mobile and don’t need “next-gen” phones, the current crop can do these things easily. These things will be essential, but are going to slip into the background of the phones functions like the calculator does today — they won’t be a differentiating factor.
