IDC Release: IDC‘s much awaited numbers for the Indian PC market for financial year 2004-05 are out. The year recorded an impressive growth in terms of unit shipments – the market grew 29 per cent over 2003-04, to exceed the 3.6 million mark. This was marginally above the total forecast unit shipments of 3.5 million in IDC India’s Quarterly PC Market Tracker report of AMJ 2004. HCL led the desktop market in the financial year with shipments of over 4,75,000 units. HP led the notebook PC market with shipments in excess of 75,000 units. However, for the overall PC market, HP claimed the number one spot, followed by HCL and IBM in that order.
Uncertainty about the implementation of Value Added Tax, an anticipated price drops post WTO, an uneven monsoon and fluctuations in the supply of components, however, did not dampen the overall yearly growth this year. On a base of 3 million unit shipments, a further growth of nearly 30 per cent is no mean achievement and the Indian PC industry needs to be complimented, the release added.
