The Economic Times:
Taking a dig at the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) for making recommendations on spectrum after 18 months, communication & IT minister Dayanidhi Maran said the telecom regulator gave views outside the given specific terms of reference. This is the first time Maran has come out strongly against TRAI’s spectrum recos since it announced them last week. However GSM Association, the global apex body of GSM operators has welcomed the TRAI recommendations. In a press release in PR Newswire GSM Association, however, called for equal treatment for all operators regarding the timing of license allocation. It further added, “This ensures that India retains alignment with the International Telecommunications Union’s (ITU) IMT2000 core (2GHz) band for 3G services.”
Interestingly, GSMA’s position is in direct contravention with the local GSM body, Cellular Operators Association of India.
