AOL has teamed up with Universal Pictures for a promotion to put its mobile instant messaging service on handsets. Cry Wolf is a movie based on the old “Boy Who Cried Wolf” fable, with a series of murders by “The Wolf” being foretold by someone using AIM. OK, nice piece of product placement, but AOL goes further — “At the end of the trailer, the following text appears: “Use your cell phone to text your AIM screen name to CWOLF (29653) and use AIM on your phone to get in on the hunt!” It’s a pretty good move by AOL which is looking to redefine itself as a company as its core ISP business gets reduced.
