UK Football Broadband Offers Are Spreading

Following Manchester United and Chelsea’s lead, Scottish Premier League Hearts will offer Hearts Broadband with Viatel; the commuications company claims to be talking with 10 other clubs. For GBP28.99 (about $50) a month, subscribers will get an unlimited 2Mb broadband connection, up to five e-mail addresses and a free one-year subsciption to Hearts World with video match highlights, live radio commentaries of every SPL match and exclusive material.
The press release goes beyond the deal itself, describing the football offers as a challenge to traditional broadband suppliers. Viatel hopes to play on the passion for football by enlisting fans interested in having similar service. The company has set up fastfooty.com — with the club email address as the big hook — where fans can “register your interest.” Giving a glimpse of its economics from the press release: “For any club that has over 1,000 interested supporters, Viatel will be able to make a strong business case to the respective football club.”
