A Singaporean company called Mobtoon is offering cartoons for mobile phones. “As the technology advances, we can do more things on the mobile phones, like now we have polyphonics, MP3 and video that we can play on mobile phones. So I started with simple things like adding in sounds, adding in images, do animations on mobile phones, and slowly we learned from there how to integrate everything, and started to learn about cell phone technology,” said Danny Tay, Mobtoon’s managing director. Each weekly episode, which has 15 to 25 frames of pictures and music, will cost S$1.99.
I’m not sure from the description whether Mobtoons are comics or animated cartoons, but it sounds like a comic with extra things added — which sounds like a good way to adapt comics to mobile phones. I’m not thinking of dialogue (the comic format does not lend itself to audio dialogue, that’s why animated cartoons are different) but rather of sounds effects, mood music and background noise. However, the story does mention animation, so I’m not sure.
