NTT DoCoMo Plans $100 Million U.S. VC Arm

Japanese mobile carrier NTT DoCoMo will launch a second U.S.-based VC firm on July 1. DoCoMo Capital will be based in San Jose, CA, and will invest primarily in U.S.-based mobile technology companies and venture funds. In 1996, NTT DoCoMo established DCM Investments in Boston. It will initially open with an investment capital of $21 million and expects to invest about $100 million over 10 years…
In late 2003, it invested $10 million into a venture fund jointly operated with Gobi Partners that looked at mainly China-based high-tech companies. In addition, NTT DoCoMo has recently been putting money into ventures in Thailand including a $1.9 million investment in digital mapping provider MappointAsia and about $546,000 in location-based service provider Mobile Innovation.
