Ars Tecnica has a fascinating article covering the history of the Graphical User Interface (GUI), that part of the operating system that provides a large part of the user experience. They cover the GUI from day one, which surprisingly was long before the computer was in place. Most interesting tidbit (at least for me)- the GUI was first conceived in the 1930s.
