The Bluetooth Special Interest Group (a 3,400-member organization which includes such mobile behemoths as Nokia and Motorola) has announced it has “begun working with two industry bodies developing rival versions of the technology commonly referred to as ultra-wideband, or UWB”, to make the two technologies interoperable. While the latest Bluetooth hitting the market has a capacity of 3Mbps UWB has potential to launch with up to 100Mbps, making it far more useful for wireless home networks. The key point for mobile users (which we expect to be everybody reading this blog) is that if this collaboration takes place the Bluetooth enabled phone (or smartphone) that you buy today will be interoperable with the UWB network you install in your house in a few years time. While you won’t be streaming HDTV to your handset there’ll probably be a number of other applications which will be enhanced by the compatibility…
