Forbes Magazine has run a very good 4-page story on mobile content…covering pretty much everything including the fact that some people are so disappointed with the actual experience they’ve gone back to using mobiles just for voice. The article covers Disney’s launch of an ESPN branded MVNO…”Disney may launch a second network under the main brand name. “Whether it’s a billion-dollar business or a $20 billion business, it’s a great opportunity,” says Laurence Shapiro, head of Disney’s domestic mobile business, formed in 2001. While the Net bubble gave rise to businesses that built something first in the vain hope that customers and profits might come later, in the cellevision revolution, “It’s build it, they’re already here, and they are purchasing content,” Shapiro says.”
Also something that I missed from Jamba (the European name for Jamster, currently the subject of legal action in the US): “One game lets you steer an onscreen Ferrari by rotating the phone instead of struggling with a stubby joystick; software behind the camera lens tells the game where you’re steering.” A lot of effort has gone into making hardware that recognizes the movement of the handset, and a software approach that can be used with any camera phone is pretty elegant — although there are possibly issues with effectiveness, I don’t know.
