Billboard To Give Charts Short Codes For Mobile Downloads

Billboard magazine is planning to launch a mobile initiative in June which will eventually allow mobile phone users to download any song on its numerous charts using “short codes.” The codes will appear in the weekly early this summer. Apparently about 20 percent of Billboard’s revenue is consumer driven, and Billboard president and publisher John Kilcullen expects that figure to double. It’s a pretty smart (and obvious) move — if you are going to put lists of content before an audience on a regular basis you may as well give them the opportunity to buy the content in a way that gives you a slice of the revenue. Mobile shortcodes make the process very easy to do since you don’t need a payment system.
