The major broadcasting powers are appointing new digital heads, indicative of the turaround and their seriousness: CBS appointed Larry Kramer as the head of its new digital unit recently, and now NBC Universal…it has promoted Deborah Reif as president of digital media, a newly created post. In a release, NBC CEO Bob Wright said that “the production, delivery and protection of our content in the digital age is one of NBC Universal’s most important priorities.”
She will lead the company’s broadband and wireless strategies and oversee new digital media growth. She also will oversee NBC Universal’s company-wide focus on digital content protection, in partnership with Rick Cotton, who is NBC Universal executive VP and general counsel.
Staci adds: One big difference between the CBS and NBC Universal choices for digital leadership — Kramer’s resume is full of content and business experience, much of it in the digital realm, while Reif came through the corporate ranks. She’s been NBCU’s evp of financial structuring since February 2004; prior to that she spent more than 30 years with GE, in posts including CEO of Financial Guaranty Insurance Company, risk responsibility for the telecommunications portfolio at GE Financial Services — and the jobs that might be her greatest qualification for this new gig — risk management operations for two GE divisions.
