Home Phone Content

ViseonIt’s not really mobile, but…Viseon, which sells a VoIP digital phone to hook up to a homes broadband link, has announced that “AccuWeather.com will provide national and local weather content to the company’s pilot program, slated for late 2005…ViseonMedia has plans in the works to add content from more cable channels, local and national broadcast networks, web portals and print media”. The phone lacks the main benefit of a mobile phone — ie, mobility — and while I see the benefit of cheaper calls using VoIP I can’t think of any content that people would prefer to get on the phone screen rather than through channels they already have in the home (TV, computer, etc). Maybe something to watch for those long, boring conversations with your senile grandmother-in-law? Or for when you’re put on hold…

Anyway, there’s no real reason why content intended for a mobile phone can’t be sent to this VoIP phone, so it could increase the market…especially since bandwidth ceases to be an issue.
