Motorola Launches Real-Time Global Online Multiplayer Service

MotorolaMotorola is offering multiplayer games from its Hellomoto portal. “Multi-player games on hellomoto.com mean that users in Taiwan, for example, will be able to play users in the US, either through hellomoto.com or through a mobile operator service”…this is a very good way for handset manufacturers to differentiate themselves and ensure people still think of them when they buy a phone. True, most handsets are sold through operators, but very few operators have the reach of the major handset manufacturers.

Motorola is using Terraplay MOVE, which is “designed for all types of multiplayer games in the mobile space…from turn-based games, sports games, action games and racing to full multiplayer games with thousands of concurrent players.”

“Motorola believes immersive human-to-human applications will be key drivers for growth in the mobile industry,” said Ronan Smyth, Applications Manager, Motorola. Good thinking, considering everyone else seems to be focussed on the “one-to-many” mobile technologies such as broadcast TV…

Players will be able to take direct control of their Sim without having to use their cursor. EA said all handheld versions will feature unique storylines and will ship simultaneously with the console games.”

BoulderDash: Infospace has launched a mobile version of BoulderDash on mobile phones. The nice part is that levels are generated randomly so people don’t play the same thing every time — a nice feature for a device that you have with you constantly. Verizon has a competition with the game to win prizes…
