Fans of Hans Christian Anderson (author of such fairy tales as The Ugly Ducking, The Emperor’s New Clothes and The Little Mermaid) will soon be able to access several of his tales on mobile phones thanks to a deal between ohm:tv and Danish animation company Studio Campfire. The fairytales are presented in the form of an interactive comic book, and the launch coincides with the 200th anniversary of Anderson.
There are two other interactive comic series on offer. Inspector Danger’s Crime Quiz follows “Inspector Danger and his dim-witted assistant Alfie” who go around solving crimes – the mobile user follows clues to try and solve the puzzle. Kurt Dunder’s Adventures is about an exploring scientist, his friend and a chimpanzee who set off to find “legendary lost Polo people deep inside the jungle of Congo”, with the reader’s help.
Hans Spielthenner, the director of ohm:tv claimed “the new shows are a first glimpse into the future of mobile entertainment”. I think he might have a point – sure, you could play these sort of games on your computer, but there’s a lot of more interesting stuff you can do there. A puzzle you can download to play while you’re waiting for the bus (or whatever) is the kind of thing people look for on a mobile…those who have spent hours trying to escape The Crimson Room or the later Viridian Room will know what I’m talking about…
