Korea Pushes Homegrown Mobile Internet platform

Korea’s three mobile operators have indicated they are going to stop using Qualcomm’s BREW platform to download applications to handsets and use the Korean application WIPI (Wireless Internet Platform for Interoperability). What’s wrong with Symbian? The Ministry of Information and Communication has vowed to make WIPI compulsory. I’m all for using local technology, but if the rest of the world is using something else the local tech would have to have a lot of advantages to be worth it. Helping the economy is one thing, but not if the local mobile content developers find it increases their costs because they have to support another platform.
