No, it’s not about mobile spam…it’s a service called Send Word Now for sending messages to a large number of people in emergency situations. You know it’s not spam because it costs “about $4,200 a year for 50 contacts”. “The service is mostly for those moments when other forms of communication may not work, said CEO Sanford Cohen. One customer, for instance, recently used it to ping board members who were on their way to the airport. They were headed for a meeting in Florida–but so was a hurricane. They canceled their flight.” It’s also being used more in day-to-day situations.
CNet has described Send Word Now as a “startup”, but the service was used by the Bank of New York during the major blackout of 2003 in the US and Canada. When does a company cease to be a startup? (from Textually.org)
