China’s first TV drama to be shown exclusively on mobile phones will begin shooting on March 27, reported the Beijing Star Daily. The interesting part of this story is the research conducted by Beijing-based Leshi Media Group, the investor for the show, called ‘Appointment’. “The length was said to be determined according to the cognitive limitations of subscribers…(The company) found in a market survey that mobile phone users feel tired if they stare at small cellphone screens for too long. A 25-minute TV drama with five parts was found to be optimal”. Most made-for-mobile TV shows in the Western world have episodes only one minute long. Whether that reflects lower “cognitive limitations” in western viewers or a lack of research on the part of the producers — or some other reason — I don’t really know….
