The amount of hype given by the press to viruses on mobile devices is incredibly excessive considering how little harm they actually do. Nevertheless, it is best not to create a system that is vulnerable to malware in the first place rather than try and fix it after the fact. Mobile consulting company Northstream argues that certification will help reduce malware, with people being able to tell if content was ‘safe’. “In addition to protecting users, application certification can improve user experience and open up new possibilities for developers – it’s therefore a means to protect existing revenues and grow the business in the future.”
It could help…The Register is reporting on a new mobile trojan attacking Symbian smartphones, and stated the virus is “largely a risk confined to people downloading content from dodgy sources”. Which led me to wonder what they considered a dodgy source…and how the average punter could tell if a mobile website was dodgy or not.
