Cingular Offers Exclusive Content From Star Wars Episode III

Star Wars III: Revenge of the SithCingular has captured an exclusive deal to offer an enormous amount of mobile content based on Star Wars, which it will be launching over the next five months with the launch of Star Wars III: Revenge of the Sith smack-bang in the middle of it. The content will include 9 new games ($5.99 a pop), and more than 50 animated screensavers, 50 MMS greeting cards, 100 ringtones (including Music Tones, polyphonic and voice tones) and more than 200 colorful wallpaper graphics ($1.99 a pop). Some details of content are in the release, for example currently available ringtones are “Star Wars Main Theme,” “Binary Sunset,” “Imperial March,” “Yoda’s Theme”.

This is a huge deal, as far as I know Star Wars is the most popular (and profitable) series of movies ever made. In fact, I once saw a list on the Internet Movie Database of how much money each actor had made for all their movies. In the top 10 were two people most people had never heard of – the actors who play R2D2 and C3P0. (Harrison Ford topped the list because of the combined efforts of Star Wars and Indiana Jones, but that was before the latest batch of Star Wars movies). My point with all this is that – based purely on brand – this could be one of the most profitable content deals Cingular has ever done, and if the content is good uptake should go through the roof. Mind you, they must have paid a lot to get the exclusive rights to market this: considering its popularity it’s something I would have made available to everyone, myself. Personally, I’d pay a fair bit for a ringtone of Yoda saying “Ringing, your phone is. Answer it, you must.”
