Emily has pointed to a service that will send you a notification of lost luggage via SMS (or e-mail or phone). Unfortunately the system relies on someone finding your luggage contacting i-Trak, which makes it only marginally more useful than a normal tag with contact details. I’m sure something could be done to automate the system, possibly using RFID readers or something. For that matter, if a luggage tag contained an RFID chip it could set off an alarm when being loaded onto the wrong aeroplane. That’s bound to reduce costs for the airlines, and wouldn’t raise privacy concerns because luggage tags are removed at the end of the trip anyway.
