The Journal just sent out a news alert claiming that the Disney board has selected Bob Iger to succeed Michael Eisner as CEO. An earlier Online Journal story suggests that Iger’s chances improved after eBay CEO Meg Whitman took herself out of contention. At his CSFB Media Week appearance in December — part of his road show campaign for CEO — Iger highlighted Disney’s online and mobile efforts. Between his prepared remarks and his answers to some questions I had during a press gaggle, I came away with the sense that Iger “gets” wireless. Some comments of his to keep in mind if the Journal report pans out:– “… what I think is important is we view the world as one great opportunity for a content player to distribute content to consumers in just about every market.”– “Today we are more poised to take advantage of growth opportunities than five years ago. It’s time to invest.”– “You no longer call them cell phones — they’re mobile devices.”– “We’re launched on 25 different mobile platforms. Growth of delivery over wireless platforms is going to be dramatic. We want to position ourselves aggressively to take advantage of that growth. We’ve done that already and we going to continue to.”– “We haven’t announced we’re going to do any more (MVNOs) in the Disney family although it’s possible we will. There’s nothing specific in terms of the (ESPN MVNO) investment but we’re not talking hundreds of millions of dollars.”
