Sony’s new batch of management has the goal of combining its sprawling empire. “New chairman and CEO Stringer has a background in media and entertainment, new president Ryoji Chubachi hails from Sony’s electronics division, and new executive deputy president and group chief financial officer Katsumi Ihara presided over mobile telecom unit Sony-Ericsson”. Jupiter Research said the appointments “indicated the importance of content in the digital (era). With the notable exception of its PlayStation, Sony hasn’t managed to find a unified vision for content and electronics”, while another industry observer said it was Sony’s shame that it hadn’t introduced the iPod or integrated music downloads. It’s a very good point – Sony has a game platform, a music studio, a movie studio and a mobile handset business. If these were combined properly the group is a player in just about every area predicted to explode in the next few years.
