‘Mobile generation’ going back to the tube

Mark Selby, vice president of Nokia’s multimedia unit that oversees its mobile television initiative, has pooh-poohed the notion that TV on mobile phones will have to be made especially for the smaller screen and shorter expected watching time of the audience. Rather, “straight broadcast television” is going to be the best model to use on mobile phones. “Consumers absolutely want it,” said Selby. “They have expectations. Those expectations can be met [technologically] today. Consumers are already used to the notion of watching video on a mobile device… This is what they want. They understand it, they know when their favorite shows are on.” I’m not sure I agree with this, but then I haven’t watched a TV show with any kind of dedication since Buffy hung up her stake. Yes, people know when their favorite shows are on, which means they’ll make sure to be home watching it or else they’ll record it. Still, as Selby points out, a number of surveys have shown people want it and have said they will pay up to $20 or euros per month for the service…
