UK band New Order is using Hypertag technology to promote their latest album. Hypertag units will be installed in a couple of HMV stores, and consumers can receive “free music clips, ringtones or wallpaper, depending on their phone-capability”. Once people realize the stuff is free they’ll probably get it even if they’ve never heard of New Order, and some of the those people will buy the album as a result. If this were a permanent thing with the band being promoted changing regularly you’d even get people dropping buy just to get the free content – one of the best forms of advertising you can get.
