Nokia Sees 70 Million 3G Users by End 2005: On the first day of 3GSM Nokia confidently predicted there will be 70 million 3G handsets in use by the end of 2005, up from 16 million at the end of last year (but still a drop in the mobile handset ocean). In related news, Qualcomm is predicting a sub-$50 3G handset in a couple of years thanks to some chips on its production roadmap. The article amusingly describes Qualcomm as being “at the fringes of the 3GSM mobile trade show”, where it is obviously not yet comfortable following the GSM/CDMA wars…
Nokia bows deeply to operators: Nokia has also announced one of its main concerns will be ensuring its handsets are customizable by operators. “On top of an existing range of options, the Nokia 6101 clamshell camera phone, introduced at the event, presents operators with an extended range of software customization options, including operator icons and menus, operator-branded graphics and tones, and branded access to operator services.” It has been previously argued that this strategy is just Nokia biding its time…
Mobile industry admits failing businesses: Chief Executives from mobile companies have admitted they could focus a bit more on their enterprise customers rather than video and music… “Enterprise customers want to be able to control their communication costs but today mobile professionals are supported by four or five different operators for working remotely”.
Linux paves way for cheaper smartphones: “At the 3GSM World Congress in Cannes, Infineon Technologies, Samsung and embedded Linux specialist Trolltech claimed this week to have created the world’s first 3G smartphone built around the Linux OS… Although the companies have no immediate plans to put the phone into production, they say there has been widespread interest from mobile operators and handset manufacturers in the potential of Linux as a more open OS for smartphones.”
