It’s Valentine’s Day and everybody’s champing at the bit to help their customers find their One True Love – or at least an indication that someone, somewhere, thinks they’re worth spending 30 seconds to send a message to. Since most telcos and content carriers know you’re dying to brighten up the day of someone beloved to you, they offer ringtones, wallpapers, multimedia messages and other tools to help you achieve that happy goal. On a slightly sadder note, if you’re a hammer looking for a heart most of the companies which offer sweet messages of affection also gleefully offer animated nasties in order to express your creativity at being ruthless. For example, this little tidbit: “Meet Your Mate Or Dump Your Date With Mixipix Whether it’s a declaration of true love or an ‘I have a restraining order, creep’, mixipix has a message for every occasion. Users can log into the company’s webpage and choose from a huge range of animated messages. They can send them to anybody with a colour wap-enabled phone an MMS account is not required.”
Of course, not everybody is in a relationship, and a number of services have sprung up to remedy that. For example Match.com “allows users to create profiles, upload photos, search profiles using multiple search parameters including geography, and chat with other users” on the Sprint network and is currently being promoted for Valentine’s Day, and Proxidate which allows users to create a profile which will be shared via Bluetooth with any compatible person on the same service who happens to be in the proximity. Word to the wise: Don’t get too specific or selective with your criteria.
I’d be interested in hearing any ideas that could be good for Valentine’s Day – preferably one’s that aren’t in commercial use yet. You have my email address…
