Companies that make cell-phone content face resistance from carriers

It’s no secret that carriers want to control everything that a consumer does with their handset, but there are a lot of people who aren’t happy with that scenario. “The carriers have convinced everyone that the only thing that counts is what carriers tell them,” said Mark Weber, founder of PaletSoft Inc. Weber argues that people want choice, freedom, and the lower prices that comes from having few people in the value chain and will therefore seek out independent content providers. To which the carriers have the following rebuttal: “If the trend of consumers buying their own content without going through carriers caught on, Knoop said, the industry would have to come up with some kind of seal of approval. Otherwise, consumers will be left frustrated with content that doesn’t work.”
